1. WHAT IS HOSPICE?
  • Hospice is a philosophy of care that focuses on comfort and quality of life.  It provides medical service and emotional support as well as spiritual resources for people who are in the last stages of a serious illness.  Hospice care also helps family members manage the practical details and emotional challenges of caring for a dying loved one.
 2. WHAT AGE DOES ONE NEED TO BE TO RECEIVE HOSPICE CARE?
  • Hospice Services at Methodist ElderCare provides care to individuals ages 18 and above, who have a life-limiting illness.
3. WHO’S INVOLVED?

Our hospice team works alongside your caregivers to develop an individualized comprehensive care program.  The hospice team usually consists of: 
  • RN Case Manager
  • Hospice Aide
  • Social Worker
  • Spiritual Counselor
  • Medical Director
  • Volunteer Coordinator
  • Bereavement Coordinator
  • Volunteers
  • Administrative and Support Staff
4. WHO PAYS?
  • Hospice is covered 100% by Medicare and Medicaid and is a benefit of most private insurances.
5. WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL?

It is time to call Hospice Services at Methodist ElderCare after the patients physician has certified that he/she has a life expectancy of six months or less and the patient  is experiencing symptoms  which may include:
 
  • An increase in pain, nausea and/or breathing distress
  • Repeated hospitalizations or trips to the emergency room
  • Failure to “bounce back” after medical setbacks
  • Decrease in function requiring assistance with walking, eating, bathing, dressing and/or personal hygiene
  • Decrease in alertness
  • Significant decrease in appetite and weight loss
